In a manual trans.
It came with my new-to-me MJ. It just feels so awkward in my hand. What am I supposed to do, grab the side in my finger tips? Rest my palm on the handle and wrap my fingers around it? It all just feels wrong.
The 2wd 2.5L short bed MJ, for your viewing pleasure. I suspect the wet spot on the bumper was the last little bit of coolant getting blown through the crusty as hell radiator.
Cause there’s nothing at all left in the system. The PO said it had an overheating problem, so given the state of the rad there’s most of a new cooling system waiting for me at Napa. Gonna toss that all in later and see how it goes. I don’t normally care for the shotgun approach but given the state of the radiator, I can’t really see the water pump being in much better shape.
Also in the Bad Ideas with Gog saga, towing that much weight with the factory five-speed ZJ. It definitely needs heavier springs in the back for a start, although I wonder what they would’ve been like if they weren’t as badly sagged. It was okay in the flats, just a bit slow, but as soon as I hit the mountains it became painfully obvious it needs deeper gears than the 3.55's for tow-pig duty. Coolant temp was rock stead around the vertical mark on the gauge (100°C/210°F, pick your cluster) though, despite pulling uphill in 40°C/100+°F heat. With no a/c I was having to stop because I was overheating, not the Jeep. But no wiggles or unruly behaviour despite way too much weight. With proper springs and deeper gears I would probably do it again, just maybe not for 200 miles over/along the continental divide.

I get it. But it makes more sense in a 3 or 3 speed car when you aren’t doing a lot of side to side movement. I tried to get one for my 91 Civic at one point just because I thought I’d be funny, but all the adapters it came with were in inches not metrics

I had a t handle back in the day. Drove me nuts until I rotated it 30 degrees clockwise.
Still replaced it later on.

They look cool, but I think they’re better with an automatic transmission.
That said, I wondering if I can get an adapter to fit a T-handle on my car’s DSG?

Had one on my buggy. Didn’t care for it. Switched it out for an 8-ball style and thew the Hurst clone away.

I have that same exact shift knob in my XJ! Bought it that way, I kinda like it actually. Funny that we both have the same one.

^^^^^^^^^ This right here.
Still not ideal, but that’s how a t-handle should be mounted.

I’ve seen it on a few others too. I never really got it, it just looked silly to me. Now after using one I really don’t get it. But everyone’s different I guess.

Yeah. I posted up in a local Jeep group to see if anyone wanted to swap for factory. It's just weird.

I’m a bigger guy at 6'2/230 but it doesn't come anywhere near my thing. I can't see a middle seat passenger much appreciating it though.

Too bad you didn’t know a machinist who could have made you one at the time......

It wouldn’t go clockwise so I went about 330° CCW. It does feel a lot better under the hand, so I guess w e’ll see how it goes when it’s driving again.

Don't need a machinist, just get one a little smaller than necessary with any old thread, and drill and tap it yourself.

the t handle is one of my favorite shifter handles...... the draw is that it fits right into the palm of your hand, and you get get a spectacular grip on it when you go to yank the gears..... its very useful if you are someone who doesnt use the clutch that much when shifting..........

I think the key to greatness here is not having to move the shifter sideways.

on the v- gate, yeah........ but that shifter handle, once you get it sanded down a bit with some real coarse paper, and put a tooth on the handle(get it so that you can really grip it), you can get mean yanking a transmission in and out of gear without the clutch. it helps to get the rpms close, but i love the grip of the handle..... close behind it would be....
the dodge pistol grip handle.......

Well, I’ve obviously not made one before, but I have a roll brake with a set of tubing slots, so I could roll something like the ring ought of about $5 of 5/16 tubing easily... then insert it into drilled 3/4 rod, tap the bottom of the rod, weld, and wrap the grip with $5 of tennis racket tape.
Then, a $10 button switch to control...something, and you have a whole RAF flight stick style handle.

It took a little bit to get used to, but know I love it on there. It’s not too bad on the XJ since you’re not really power shifting or moving fast. You can take your time, just rest your palm on the top and go at it.
